What is a Shamrock?
The shamrock is a three leaf clover that is considered one of Ireland's symbols. It is often associated with Christianity, as it was used by St. Patrick to impart the Christian teachings of the Holy Trinity - God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In recent years, the shamrock has been used as an important design in product logos in Ireland, such as the famous logo of the Aer Lingus, Ireland's official airline. Every St. Patrick's Day, Irish people all over the world wear shamrocks and fresh shamrock clovers are delivered by Aer Lingus in all Irish embassies worldwide.
Shamrock Symbolism
In the late 1700s, the shamrock symbol was used by Irish soldiers who rebelled against England. The symbol was then associated with rebellion, and to avoid being tagged a rebel, many Irish people wore the red and green cross instead. This paved the way for the shamrock to be closely associated with the Christian cross.
The word shamrock originated from the Irish word, "seamrog", which means "summer plant. In ancient times, even before the shamrock was associated with St. Patrick, the Druids even considered the resiliency of the shamrock to thrive even in the highest altitudes as a sign of life. They considered shamrocks as symbols of motherhood and joy also and had often used them in Celtic rituals.
Mystical Meaning of Shamrocks
The shamrock has been considered in old legends as the only way to undo a leprechaun's evil trickery. A leprechaun is a harmless Fairy who is said to be guarding tons of gold, and any person who tries to discover where he hides his gold becomes a victim to his mischief.
There are many other legends and old beliefs built around shamrocks. For example, it is considered a sign of an impending storm if the tips of a shamrock clover are seen standing up.
Uses of Shamrocks
Shamrocks and other kinds of clover leaves are high in protein and are considered edible. Clover leaves and pods may also be dried and may either be grounded into flour or used as tea leaves.
Many people believe that shamrocks have medicinal properties, and that they may be used to cure scorpion stings as well as snake bites. There are recent claims that clover leaves contain morphine, but research on this matter is still inconclusive.
Today, there are many novelty items with shamrock logos that are excellent ideas for people who are fond of symbolic gifts.
The boxes most widely sought after come from one of four small Russian villages - Palekh, Fedoskino, Kholui, and Mstera. Special schools have been established at these places where artists train for four years before they become members of each village's art community. Each village also has its unique style.
